AION LONDON

My mother loved fashion for forty years.
The industry ignored her for most of them.
She came from a small town outside Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1973. She arrived in New York with one suitcase, two hundred dollars, and the quiet dignity of a woman who had decided exactly who she was going to be.

She came from a small town outside Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1973. She arrived in New York with one suitcase, two hundred dollars, and the quiet dignity of a woman who had decided exactly who she was going to be.

1981

Eight years later she had her own small alterations shop on a side street in Astoria. She pressed seams, repaired hems, and took in coats for women who couldn't afford tailors on the other side of the river. On weekends she sewed for herself — and for anyone who asked. She charged almost nothing. She just wanted women to feel the way she believed they deserved to feel.

1985 — 2019

For nearly forty years she bought the fashion magazines every month. She never looked like the women on the cover. Neither did most of us. But she kept showing up anyway — finding the one piece on page 47 that nobody else noticed, making it work for her life, her body, her reality. She did that for four decades without anyone in the industry ever noticing she existed.

2019

She was diagnosed in the autumn of 2019. By then she had been dressing women in that shop for almost forty years. She kept working until she couldn't.

March 2021

She passed away on a Tuesday morning in March 2021. She was sixty-nine years old. She looked, even then, like a woman who had never stopped caring.

March 2021 — 3am

The night after her funeral I couldn't sleep. Somewhere around 3am I came across the ancient Greek word AION — αἰών. The god of eternal time. Not the time that runs out. The time that returns. The vital force. The part of a person that doesn't diminish no matter how many years pass.

I named this store in her kitchen at 4am. I wrote it on the back of one of her magazines.

AION — αἰών

Not the time that runs out. The time that returns. The vital force. The part of you that doesn't age.

We named this brand after that word. After her.

In 2022 we launched with fourteen pieces.

Every single one went through one question before it went on the site.
